What you'll be doing?
Supporting the business and our divisional offices, our Head Office functions cover all departments from our Executive Board through to our support functions such as Group Design and Technical, HR, Health and Safety, IT, Sales and Marketing, Commercial, Procurement, Group Finance, Corporate Affairs, as well as Legal and Company Secretariat. We also have a specialised function – Barratt Partnerships.
 
While the work varies from team to team, our key requirements don’t: you must be well organised, extremely helpful and resourceful, and able to use your initiative. You’ll understand that what you do is important, and impacts on your team, the department, and the wider business.
 
You will be independently responsible for the provision of a comprehensive legal service to BDW Trading Limited (“BDW”), Barratt Developments PLC and any of its group companies, advising on a broad range of legal matters, covering both property and non-property legal advice.
 
You will be expected to:
  • Advise and assist BDW’s Divisional Offices on legal matters associated with any property related transactions including land acquisitions, property related security arrangements, affordable housing transactions and plot sales
  • Review, advise on and negotiate a broad range of commercial contracts across all areas of the business (divisional and group functions)
  • Provide legal advice on customer care issues and any claims made by customers against BDW or any group company (including formal complaints, IDRS, court claims etc.)
  • Provide litigation advice to the business on commercial litigation matters
  • Advise the business on all other general legal queries received from the business on a day to day basis
  • Manage external legal support and budgets
  • Assist with any Group project work undertaken by the Group Legal Team as and when required
  • Prepare precedent documents and identify, develop & deliver training needed by the business on legal matters affecting their day to day roles
  • Prepare guidance materials and develop / update Group Legal owned internal policies and procedures to support the wider business in achieving its strategic objectives
  • Undertake research on relevant legal issues to ensure the individual and wider Group Legal Team can proactively support the wider business
  • Actively supervise and support administrative members of the Group Legal Team in relation to Subject Access Requests
  • Actively supervise and support junior secondees joining the Group Legal Team to supplement FTE legal resource
What you'll need?
The successful candidate will need to:
 
  • Have qualified as a solicitor / barrister and able to practice in England & Wales
  • Ideally (but not essential) have experience of working in house and knowledge of residential property, commercial contracts and litigation legal matters
  • Have the ability to grasp, quickly and accurately, new and complex concepts and areas of law
  • Be able to work autonomously and as part of a wider team
  • Be able to work effectively and efficiently under pressure
  • Be able to evaluate and balance priorities and co-ordinate work effectively in order to meet deadlines and deal with high workloads
  • Have sound written and oral communication skills and a comprehensive capability to use core IT software, including Word, Excel and Powerpoint
  • Have a worked understanding and appreciation of the strategic needs of the wider business and be able to deliver their legal advice in a manner which effectively balances the risk/reward ratio of a particular recommendation against the commercial aims and objectives of the business
