What you'll be doing?
Supporting the business and our divisional offices, our Head Office functions cover all departments from our Executive Board through to our support functions such as Group Design and Technical, HR, Health and Safety, IT, Sales and Marketing, Commercial, Procurement, Group Finance, Corporate Affairs, as well as Legal and Company Secretariat. We also have a specialised function – Barratt Partnerships.
 
While the work varies from team to team, our key requirements don’t: you must be well organised, extremely helpful and resourceful, and able to use your initiative. You’ll understand that what you do is important, and impacts on your team, the department, and the wider business.
 
Reporting to the Co- Head of Property & Legal Services, you will partner with the business at a regional level, taking overall responsibility and accountability for ensuring the divisions have the appropriate and necessary legal and compliance support to deliver their strategic and operational objectives. The successful candidate will not only provide direct and hands on strategic legal advice but also coordinate with and oversee other members of the Group Legal Team and/or external advisors in the provision of legal support to the region(s) and its/their respective divisions. In addition, the successful candidate will take responsibility for managing and supporting Group-led projects/initiatives, in collaboration with other members of the Group Legal team as necessary, to ensure successful, efficient and effective delivery and implementation of the same across the business.
 
You will be expected to:
  • Take overall responsibility and accountability for strategically advising the Region(s) and its/their divisions on all legal matters, either directly or in collaboration with other members of the Group Legal function and/or external lawyers (depending on the nature of the support required)
  •  Proactively participate in and contribute to knowledge and information sharing within the Group Legal team, to ensure: (i) an aligned approach to legal support is being delivered at a regional level; and (ii) to benefit from lessons learned elsewhere in the Group/from activities of other regions
  • Supervise, coach and upskill more junior lawyers in the team to be able to meet their development needs and progress their careers within the organisation
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with the key members of the Regional and Divisional management teams, cultivating a “trusted partner/advisor” relationship to better and more closely align the Group Legal function to the objectives and needs of the business
  • Monitor and budget external legal spend both in the Group Legal function and, in collaboration with the business, the relevant Region(s) and their respective divisions, identifyingopportunities to create additional value from existing external law firm relationships and following up on implementing the same in order to generate and demonstrate that value add
  • Report to Co-Head of Property (Line Manager) and Deputy Head of Legal on a weekly basis, key activities and progress of matters ongoing within the particular Region(s) and their divisions, contributing to departmental tracking and Executive reporting
What you'll need?

The successful candidate will be at least 8 years’ PQE, with a background in property law. Ideally, the candidate will either have worked in house for a large corporate or currently be in a senior position in private practice (Senior Associate/Legal Director). Experience working in the residential housebuilding sector would be good but not an absolute pre-requisite.
