What you'll be doing?
Supporting the business and our divisional offices, our Head Office functions cover all departments from our Executive Board through to our support functions such as Group Design and Technical, HR, Health and Safety, IT, Sales and Marketing, Commercial, Procurement, Group Finance, Corporate Affairs, as well as Legal and Company Secretariat. We also have a specialised function – Barratt Partnerships.
 
While the work varies from team to team, our key requirements don’t: you must be well organised, extremely helpful and resourceful, and able to use your initiative. You’ll understand that what you do is important, and impacts on your team, the department, and the wider business.

The Corporate Sustainability team promote the sustainability of our business by providing insight and connecting teams so we that can drive those environmental and social aims that make will a difference at the national level and to future generations.

We scan the horizon internally and externally, utilising world class expertise to provide the right solutions, with the aim of bringing teams together and driving the delivery of priorities. Collaboration and cooperation is central to how we work.

Reporting to the Group Sustainability Director, you will define and successfully deliver a sustainability project framework, ensuring alignment of the Business Principles with operational activities.

You will be expected to have a clear vision of what is needed in each project area to ensure that our sustainability effort enhances overall business performance and supports the long-term interests of the Company.

Your work will transform our in-house capability, achieved by your proactive leadership of a cross functional team, and in so doing you will ensure that the Sustainability Framework promotes, protects and enhances the Company’s reputation, both internally and externally.

You will be expected to:

  • Lead the delivery of the Group Sustainability Strategy and Framework by designing, implementing, monitoring and measuring the impact of a comprehensive programme of initiatives that will ensure the business meets its commitments and targets.
  • Design the processes and business requirements that will secure ongoing performance of the Framework, and effectively embed these in core operational activities.
  • Regularly review the risks and opportunities facing the business across all ESG areas and recommend changes to the Group Sustainability Strategy and Framework ensuring that we are always proactive where there is benefit.
  • Develop and lead the implementation of stakeholder engagement plans that will secure and leverage commitment and support for the business’ sustainability ambitions internally and externally.
  • Contribute technical knowledge and expertise on sustainability issues. 
  • Proactively lead on Sustainability insights gathering, including research and analytics, to inform the Group Strategy.
  • Support the Group Sustainability Director in ensuring the voice of the customer drives decision making within the Group, by providing high quality customer data and insights. This work will cover all elements of customer insight for the organisation, and will involve:
  • developing and maintaining a roadmap to obtain insights from various channels
  • data management and customer analytics
  •  regular reporting.
In order to do this, you will:
 
  • Develop and formulate key elements of the company’s sustainability strategy and framework.
  • Successfully deliver all sustainability framework projects. Bring together and lead internal groups on the development of key metrics against which progress on sustainability will be measured and assessed internally and externally. This will include collaboration with business leaders and other internal groups, and will require driving of desired outcomes by:
  • robust monitoring and tracking of progress and performance across all key projects and initiatives.
  • development of business cases to ensure the value added from key initiatives are understood and realised.
  • Develop a co-ordinated sustainability plan and then drive the execution of this by collaborating with key groups e.g. Design & Technical, HR, Land & Planning and Sales & Marketing. These will translate our sustainability ambitions and principles into tangible short, medium and long-term outputs. 
  • Serve as the internal “go to” expert for major sustainability projects and initiatives, taking every opportunity to communicate and educate others on sustainability topics - to secure and leverage senior level commitment and support for integrating these into core business processes and decision-making. 
  • Continuously scan the external environment to manage risks, identify opportunities and trends, assess the relevance to the Group, and recommend changes to business policies and strategies where appropriate and via the appropriate mechanisms.
  • Provide regular updates and high quality reporting to the senior leadership, Executive Committee and Board, applying the outputs of this to shape the sustainability framework. 
  • Create and implement a programme of ongoing organisational communications and education to raise awareness and drive colleague advocacy for both environmental and social sustainability priorities. In addition, provide oversight for internal groups on the development of stakeholder engagement processes to inform the sustainability priorities and reporting requirements. 
  • Create and implement a customer engagement programme that will enhance the company’s reputation and improve the overall customer experience. 
  • Develop and deliver the content for these stakeholder engagement plans, and represent Barratt appropriately at all levels – government, investors, industry bodies, peer groups etc. 
  • Be the external representative for the business on specific topics and relationships, including improving stakeholder understanding, and generating support for the Company’s sustainability performance.
What you'll need?

To be successful in this role, you will:

  • Possess a relevant degree with experience in Corporate Sustainability in a medium to large size organisation.
  • Have a technical sustainability or engineering background, with experience driving a technical function to deliver an overarching strategy.
  • Demonstrate a strong numerical and technical understanding of relevant sustainability topics.
  • Possess the ability to inspire, excite and challenge by collaborating with different functions and divisions to ensure a shared journey of success.
  • Have exceptional writing skills with the ability to drive narrative development.
  • Be an exceptional programme lead, with the ability to take a project from inception and drive it through to a specific outcome.
  • Have strong teamwork and interpersonal skills, and be able to build strong relationships with stakeholders so as to develop an effective network of advocates for the sustainability programme.
  • Possess the ability to engage, influence and challenge at the most senior levels of the organisation.
  • Be an organised and effective project manager, with the ability to differentiate between conflicting priorities/issues and manage multiple tasks and prioritise effectively.
  • Have experience managing a team of Sustainability specialists.
  • Be collaborative, open minded and able to listen to other points of view.
  • Have strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrate professional curiosity and be able to think creatively, questioning conventional practices and ways of working.
